When other students have a semester vacation, Vicky Kruzmann learns how to extinguish a fire in a camp or free a crashed driver with a hydraulic rescue device from his vehicle. Vicky Kruzmann has been with the Berlin Fire Department since the middle of last year. After three and a half years, the 26-year-old will have completed her dual training, she will be the Fire Chief Inspector. "The way is hard, not sugar," she says. "But the training is interesting, and I will achieve my goal."
The chances of getting a training post and then a job in the fire department are very good at the moment in Berlin and nationwide. The need for young people is great. Applicants have an essential role to play in their professional qualifications, personality and also in their health: only when the medical examination confirms the unlimited availability of firefighting is the career path open.

Vicky Kruzmann is currently one of 429 fire-fighting trainees in the Berlin Fire Department. She graduated, got a master's in agriculture. Breitenfelde is a municipality in the district of Lauenburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. That's where she joined the volunteer fire department. "I came to Berlin out of passion for the fire brigade," she says. "Here there are more perspectives for the job." Her study qualifies her for the superior firefighting service.

First the theory of the prey, then the practice

Vicky Kruzmann graduated from Beuth University of Technology in Wedding for the first two semesters of her education. Here, in total seven semesters, theoretical foundations of natural sciences and engineering, rescue, administration and legal foundations are taught in 24 to 30 semester weeks. In addition, fire protection, civil protection and civil protection, human resources management and communications are on the curriculum. In the lecture-free time, the trainees receive the practically oriented firefighting training at the Berlin Fire and Rescue Service Academy.

In addition, traineeships in different areas of firefighting and in the seventh semester a train driver's traineeship at a firehouse are included. "It is helpful to be technically interested and practically skilled," Kruzmann explains.

If, after her training, she decides to work later in a firehouse, the prospective firefighter will lead several seasons of service and will be responsible for personnel planning and employee training. On the other hand, if she decides to work as a case officer in a service unit or on a staff, she takes on tasks in fire prevention, technology and IT, personnel management or strategic planning. "Many doors are open to me after my training," she says.

Especially the combination of theory and practice and the complexity of the possible activities excite Vicky Kruzmann at the bachelor education. She is not alone in this: "For many of our trainees, the complexity of the job is a decisive reason for their choice of occupation," explains Carsten Imm, a specialist trainer at the Berlin Fire Academy in the Ruppiner Chaussee. Other reasons for wanting to start the fire brigade are "working with people and job security". Berlin is a growing city that needs many firefighters. But always stresses that not every candidate is suitable: "Teamwork is the most important thing to bring. Life depends on it. In this way, one must be able to rely on one's partner for a hundred percent in the operation."In addition, one should be physically and psychologically resilient and have empathy, for example in patients.

Two years of training is minimum

Carsten Imm has been with the Berlin Fire Department since 2004. He has worked on many guards, has been particularly interested in technology and has continued to train. Since 2018, he's been exclusively concerned with the firefighters'offspring. Depending on the training path, the Azubis are in his care for two years or longer: with a degree, one can apply as a midfielder candidate. (Paths:"112 Classic", "112 Medic Expert" or "112 Medic"). As a great challenge it always feels to be fair to each trainee: "Every person is different, everyone has a different outlook, one learns well by listening, another by trying."
Her parents, Vicky Kruzmann says, were initially skeptical when they heard that her daughter wanted to make a career in firefighting. "But now they are proud of me," says the future firefighter. "You have to know what you want and not be distracted from your goal," she advises school leavers.
