Merkel calls for technological catch -up

According to Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe still needs to overcome a force to assert itself against China and the US in new technologies such as artificial intelligence." I am not yet sure whether we have the conditions to really play a part in this worldwide,"Merkel said on Sunday evening at the opening of the Hanover Fair.

Developments are proceeding very quickly, and Europe can only keep up with decisive action and cooperation. It called for a whole raft of measures to enable European industry to keep up with technology. These included the reform of EU aid and competition law and a new industrial policy. Merkel also announced closer cooperation with Sweden's partner country in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and battery technology at the start of the Industrial Fair.

EU to amend competition law

At the same time, the Chancellor defended "suspicions" of the economy about excessive political interference in companies. "It is right that the state should never think that it would be the better entrepreneur," she stressed. The economy should not imply to the government that we are now completely out of the picture. The debate on a new industrial policy launched by the Minister for Economic Affairs, Peter Altmaier, was nevertheless right because of the changed framework conditions in the world and should also be conducted in the EU.
Because the EU would have to act in a "visibly changed global environment" where some countries wanted to give their own companies advantages or subsidised them very heavily. The EU should therefore insist on a certain openness and equal treatment, she said, in the debate with the US and China. EU aid rules would be internationally laughed at. Competition law is based on obsolete definitions of the relevant market.
The partner country Sweden is represented in Hanover with 160 exhibitors. This puts the Scandinavians in ranking four ahead of the USA. Most exhibitors come from China, followed by Italy and Turkey. In total, around 6500 companies are represented at the Hanover Fair, of which around 60 percent from abroad. The main topics include artificial intelligence, the networking of production and the new mobile standard 5G. The organizers expect more than 220.000 visitors by Friday.
